Good design is about more than just making shit look good. It must respond to global challenges and support immediate change. As major architectural sponsor, Warren and Mahoney’s activation of Semi Permanent sought to showcase new design approaches and tools that elevate design outcomes.

The partnership resulted in a collaborative art installation that could host side events, conversations and workshops, a launch video to play after every conference break, and a brand activation system that could used throughout the venue for other vendors.

‘2022 marks the 20th anniversary of Semi Permanent. A milestone like this triggers a moment of reflection, imploring us to look back on our achievements and mistakes as the things that helped shape where we are today. It begs us to look forward, too, challenging us to think about where we might be in another 20 years’ time, or at the least where we hope to be. After all, the future is a destination we can only get to by acknowledging where we come from, and deciding what to bring with us and what to leave behind.’

A confluence of sustainability, culture and technology through an experiential art installation.

The repurposing of excess acoustic materials supplied by Autex allows the design to have a life beyond the Semi Permanent conference. The coloured ‘totems’ can individually be distributed amongst coference attendees to become a transportable ‘workshop pin board’ - extending the conversation beyond the event and considering the full lifecycle of material used in a traditional pop-up activation.

Using the systematic design software Grasshopper, the visual impact embraces the complex processes of digital scripting through a raw, geometric form. Staggered heights and repetition allow the viewing experience to change from every angle, revealing the conversation hosted within.

The installation was designed as a physical interpretation of human connection (whakapapa) - weaving together a series of individual forms, colours and scales. It has been designed to welcome communities to share insight, perspective and ambition for the future.
